Holiday Season...

We got our Christmas tree and it is 10 ft. tall. As soon as we got it into the house, Seamus was checking it out. Hopefully, he will not think that he is outdoors and go pee on the tree!

A couple of years ago, we got a huge snow storm. Seamus was unable to go outside  in the yard because he would have sank into the snow. My husband had to make a trail out so Seamus could go in and out.
Seamus enjoys going outside when is cold and loves playing in the snow!!
The level of snow was as tall as Seamus!!

HALLOWEEN DOG COSTUMES

Seamus and Stella usually dress up for Halloween to greet all kids that come by our house.

Last year, Stella was a pumpkin and Seamus was a "rufferre". The costumes were simple and inexpensive, but they looked very cute. Both of them received many nice compliments from all the kids that came by.

FALL UPDATE

Seamus and Stella enjoy playing outside, specially when  it is not hot.
During this time of the year, Seamus and Stella go out in the yard to play. Stella's favorite toy is her tennis ball. She can go for hours playing catch.
Seamus loves watching the squirrel going from tree top to tree top. He goes crazy and runs all over the yard trying to catch the squirrel.
Soon it will be Halloween. Both of them will dress up. I will be posting their Halloween outfits soon.

BUNNY NEST

Early in the morning, Seamus and Stella went outside in the backyard, and suddenly my husband kept hearing Stella barking at something in the backyard.
My husband went out with a flashlight (it was 5:30 AM), and noticed that Stella was barking at something behind the daylily plant. When he got closer, he noticed a bunny hopping out of the plant. The bunny built a small nest and had three tiny baby bunnies.
The bunnies are so tiny that they do not have their eyes open yet and did not have any fur.
We had to put a fence around the plant so Stella or Seamus will not disturb the nest.
Stella is very curious and keeps going around the area and barks at the tiny bunnies.
We have not seen the mom around, but we hope that she is checking on the little ones.

Wheaten Terrier Haircut

Seamus got a haircut yesterday. His coat was way too long and it was starting to get matted. He got a shorter haircut than the one that he usually gets.
In this photo, now you can see his beautiful  big brown eyes. Stella did not even recognized him when he came home from the groomer. After the grooming, his coat looks very healthy and soft.

NATIONAL DOG DAY

Today we celebrate National Dog Day!! We are very grateful to have Seamus and Stella as part of our family, specially Stella, who is a rescue dog. She is a very loving dog and a great playmate to Seamus.
Both of them fill our house with lots of joy!

Seamus and Stella's Vacation

A few weeks ago, we went on our summer vacation. Seamus and Stella could not come with us because we were going on a cruise.

Seamus and Stella went to the kennel located at their veterinarian's office. I like this kennel because it only allows a small amount of dogs in their facility. Because of this, Seamus and Stella get a lot of attention and play time.

I feel very comfortable leaving them there because in case of any health emergency their veterinarian is available to evaluate them and treat them. This kennel offers a complementary bath and nail clipping on the pick-up day.

As you can see in the photo, both of them enjoyed their own vacation at their favorite kennel.

Fashionable Stella

Stella wearing her purple and white polka dot summer dress.

Yummy Dog Food

Seamus and Stella are on a dry dog food diet. Because of Seamus' food allergies, he can only eat wheat free food. I add organic sweet potato to their dry food, and both of them love it. This is a very healthy addition to their diet.

Hanging Out

Seamus loves to hang out under the kitchen's table. When I am cooking in the kitchen, or when we are eating dinner, Seamus is always sitting under the table.

Wheaten Terrier Dental Hygiene

Periodic dental hygiene is very important in preventing periodontal disease. By regularly brushing the dog's teeth and incorporating healthy food in their diet, will help maintain a good dental hygiene.

Always use a dog's dental kit. The kit usually includes a pet toothbrush, a finger toothbrush, and pet-specific toothpaste. Do not use human toothpaste because it can upset your pet's stomach.

Here are some tips that you should do regularly to prevent periodontal disease in dogs:

1. inspect the dog's gums and teeth. Healthy gums should look pink and should not be swelling. The teeth should not have any brownish tartar. Note if the gums are red or white, and if there is any bloody discharge or any loose teeth.

2.  if the dog's breath is bad, it could be an indication of periodontal disease.

3. inspect the dog's mouth for any signs of cysts or tumors in the gums or tongue.

As you can see int the photo, Seamus and Stella are used to having their teeth brushed.  Always praise your dog as you brush their teeth so they don't get scare.

Seamus' Nap Time...

Seamus enjoys going in his crate for an afternoon nap. He enjoys his time alone in his own place. As you can see in the photo, he loves his crate and feels very comfortable. Life is good!

Doggie Playtime

Perhaps the difference in size, Seamus plays very well with Stella. He is very gentle with her and Stella pretends being the boss!

Stellas' car ride

Unlike Seamus, Stella does not like car rides. Every time we get her in the car, she starts winning and crying. Because she is a rescue dog and came to our town on a car ride from the rescue place in Kentucky, she is traumatized, and associates the car ride with her past rescue shelter.
Hopefully, she will overcome this, and learn to enjoy the fun car rides with his pal Seamus!

A TRIP TO THE VET...

Seamus went to the veterinarian today. He was due for a check-up and he needed to get one of the vaccines. Seamus hopped in the back of the car and on the way we went to the vet! We had an 8:00 AM appointment so we did not have to wait too long to be seen. The veterinarian gave a yummy treat to Seamus,  proceeded to do the routine check-up, and reported that Seamus looked great!
I mentioned to the doctor that Seamus has been having some brown waxy discharge on his left ear. She checked the ear, and told me that he had an ear infection. She prescribed the oral antibiotic Zenequin and the otic suspension Posatex. Both are used to treat otitis in dogs. These antibiotics work very well every time he gets an ear infection. The downsize is that Zenequin is very expensive.
The doctor recommended to give Seamus the allergy medicine, Zyrtec. She thinks that Seamus is having some allergies and this is making him prone to getting ear infections. I have also noticed that he has been sneezing and scratching his body.
After checking out at the doctor's office, we came back home. Stella was very happy to see his pal back home. She checked him out all over. Seamus was very happy to be back, and went in the backyard with Stella for their morning playtime. Summer days are here!

Status Update

Seamus and Stella have become very good pals. Now that the weather is getting warmer, both of them enjoy going in the backyard to play. Their favorite activity is to chase a squirrel around the yard.

Recently, Stella went to her yearly medical check up, and to my surprise, I found out that she tested positive for lyme disease exposure.

Stella has been on a monthly "Frontline" medication to prevent exposure, but even with that, she got infected. The veterinarian recommended to apply the tick medication every third week. According to the doctor, the medication efficacy can start to wear off by the third week, and consequently put them at risk of exposure.

The veterinarian prescribed the antibiotic doxycycline to treat Stella's lyme disease. She has to take this antibiotic twice a day for 30 days. So far, she is tolerating the medicine and has been pretty active.  This antibiotic is very effective on treating this disease. Hopefully, she will get better soon!
